11/11/11 – a date with a special meaning?

Dates such as 11/11/11, are happening more often since the start of the new millennium.

The hype for these special dates is building across popular culture, with films and stories being made about the end of the world and news reports about expectant parents eagerly waiting for their children to be born on these dates.

But is there a special meaning behind these unique dates? Or is it just pure math?

November 11, 2011, also written as 11.11.11 and 11/11/11.

Significance of 11/11/11

Based on past calendar dates such as 10/10/10, or October 10, 2010, no significant or unusual phenomenon occurs simply because of a date that has the same numbers in a sequence.

The numerical sequence of November 11 holds a special significance in the binary numeral system, which is the base-2 number system that represents numeric values using two symbols, 0 and 1. The date of November 11 has a binary number of 111110 where it has a decimal equivalent of 62 in the year 2010, and a binary number of 111111 with a decimal equivalent of 63 in the year 2011.

The number eleven has a special characteristic in mathematics where it is a prime number. It contains some interesting peculiarities where the number eleven times itself equals a palindrome:

He then performed his new song ‘Under the Mistletoe’.“Had an amazing night at the Bambi Awards here in Germany tonight. Got to meet some great fans too. Thank u for the honour,” the ‘Baby’ hitmaker tweeted after the event.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A powerful Bering Sea storm hit western Alaska early Wednesday with high winds and surging seas.The National Weather Service office in Fairbanks has received reports of some roofs blowing off in Nome where water reached the base of buildings.Meteorologist Scott Berg says some homes close to ocean have been evacuated, but there are no reports of injuries.He says a storm surge could bring more severe flooding later Wednesday in the Nome area.Berg says blizzard conditions prevailed overnight in quite a few places with sustained winds of 60 mph and gusts to 80.Copyright 2011 The Associated Press. Berlusconi asked to quit after humiliation in budget vote.

Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has confirmed he will stand down after a new budget law is approved in parliament.Mr Berlusconi made the decision to quit after a humiliating blow in a parliamentary budget vote earlier in the day."After the approval of this finance law, which has amendments for everything which Europe has asked of us and which the Eurogroup has requested, I will resign, to allow the head of state to open consultations," he told his own Canale 5 television.Earlier the Italian PM told president Giorgio Napolitano he will step down after parliament passes a key austerity bill next week.Mr Berlusconi only won a crunch parliamentary vote on budget policy overnight because the centre-left opposition abstained.He secured only 308 votes in the 630-seat chamber of deputies, indicating he no longer had an absolute majority.Even his closest political allies asked him to step down after financial markets pushed interest rates on Italian borrowing to record levels close to 7 per cent - the same level which prompted Ireland and Portugal to ask for bailouts.

There is news that  Greek prime minister Papandreou has agreed to step down and make room for a new interim government, and that Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi is considering stepping down. How will this impact financial markets? It should help some, we'll know for sure when they open, but the new Greek government will still face a difficult set of problems, as will Italy, whether Berlusconi is in charge or not. The debt problem, general economic malaise, and the social and political problems that come with the proposed resolution to the crisis will still be present. Ultimately it will depend upon the new governments' ability to convince people to accept the costs that come with any agreement to resolve the debt crisis. So far, that's been a tough sell.

What impact could this have on the US? Many analysts believe the US economy is relatively sheltered from shocks in Europe, but financial problems have a way of spreading much further and deeper than anticipated and the last thing the US economy needs right now is a negative shock that puts a further drag on the recovery.o far, Europe has managed to do just enough to avoid a major meltdown, but time is running out and as worries mount other countries such as Italy are increasingly in danger. Let's hope this time is different and this is the first step toward Greece and Europe more generally solving their problems.

Angela Dorothea Merkel ( born 17 July 1954) is the current Chancellor of Germany (since 22 November 2005).

Merkel was born Angela Dorothea Kasner in Hamburg, West Germany, the daughter of Horst Kasner (6 August 1926 in Berlin-Pankow – 2 September 2011), a Lutheran pastor, and his wife, Herlind (born 8 July 1928 in Danzig/Gdańsk, as Herlind Jentzsch), a teacher of Englishand Latin. Her mother was once a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.Her grandparents on her mother's side, one of them being Masurian, lived in Elbing/Elbląg in East Prussia. Merkel stated that she is one quarter Polish in an interview with Der Spiegel in 2000.She has a brother, Marcus (born 7 July 1957), and a sister, Irene (born 19 August 1964).

Merkel's father studied theology in Heidelberg and, afterwards, in Hamburg. In 1954 her father received a pastorate at the church in Quitzow (near Perleberg in Brandenburg), which then was in Communist East Germany, and the family moved to Templin. Thus Merkel grew up in the countryside 80 km (50 mi) north of Berlin. Gerd Langguth, a former senior member of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, states in his book that the family's ability to travel freely from East to West Germany during the following years, as well as their possession of two automobiles, leads to the conclusion that Merkel's father had a "sympathetic" relationship with the communist regime, since such freedom and perquisites for a Christian pastor and his family would have been otherwise impossible in East Germany.

In 1977, Angela Kasner married physics student Ulrich Merkel. The marriage ended in divorce in 1982. Her second and current husband is quantum chemist and professor Joachim Sauer, who has largely remained out of the media spotlight. They first met in 1981,became partners later and married privately on 30 December 1998.She has no children, but Sauer has two adult sons from a previous marriage.
